Summer temperatures rarely reach beyond the mid 80’s and night are cool. The average snowfall is 143 inches in town and 350 inches in the resorts. The nearby Cottonwood Canyon resorts of Solitude, Brighton, Snowbird and Alta receive an average of over 500 inches of snow each year.

History

In 1868 silver was discovered in the Park City area by soldiers who climbed over the mountains from Big Cottonwood Canyon. During a snowstorm, they marked the outcropping with a bandana and returned to find it in the spring. The first mine was named Flagstaff. The silver rush lasted 20 years and Park City (originally called Parley’s Park City) was incorporated as a town in 1884. In 1898 there were over 10,000 people in Park City, more than today. Park City prospered as a mining town until the late 40’s and was declared a ghost town in 1954, although there were 1,150 “ghosts” actually living here. In 1958 United Park City Mines began exploring the idea of turning the company’s land into a ski area and in 1963 Treasure Mountain Resort (now Park City Mountain Resort) was opened. Lift tickets were just $3.50. Today Park City is a thriving resort community with three major ski resorts and 64 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Park City also offers intellectual and cultural pursuits. The community hosts colorful and eclectic festivals throughout the year, including the world-famous Sundance Film Festival, the Park City Kimball Arts Festival and the Fidelity Investments Park City Jazz Festival, just to name a few. In every season, the Park City Performing Arts Foundation offers celebrated live dance and musical performances, and every weekend the Park City Film Series screens a different independent film.
